Suburban Gardens: DC’s Black Amusement Park in Deanwood

Black-and-white studio portrait of Sherman H. Dudley, a young Black man in a three-piece suit and wide-brimmed hat with a watch chain, standing with one hand in his pocket.

Suburban Gardens opened on 50th and Hayes NE in June 1921, built by a Black-owned development company whose investors included the vaudeville magnate Sherman H. Dudley. It was the only major amusement park ever inside the District, and it existed because Glen Echo, Chesapeake Beach, and Marshall Hall would not let Black Washingtonians through the gate.
