Here’s a haunting and solemn colorized photo from 1921, much like the Lincoln photo I posted a while back. The Unknown Soldier from World War I had just arrived by ship at the Washington Navy Yard.

The body was interred at Arlington National Cemetery on November 11th, 1921. Both former President Woodrow Wilson and current President Harding were present at the ceremony (watch video of it here).
Awesome picture. If you notice, on the right hand side of the photo is the General of the Armies John J. “Black Jack” Pershing. He is in the olive colored trenchcoat with his hat on. In the history of the country only he and George Washington earned the title “General of the Armies” – the highest rank in the military.
Great picture, I am surprised by the hats that the first two Navy pall bearers are wearing. I thought the white hat predated WWI.
