A Look Back at the Cornerstone Laying of the Lincoln Memorial in 1915

Here are a couple great photographs from the cornerstone laying of the Lincoln Memorial. The ceremony was held on February 15th, 1915.

  1. It’s interesting to look at the folks who appear in both photos. For instance, the blue-eyed young man atop the cornerstone in the bottom picture appears on the left of the top picture (notice the white smudge on his right knee). The African American men easing the stone into place on the bottom picture appear on the lower right of the top picture. I also found the top picture’s glimpse of Constitution Ave. fascinating. Look at how rudimentary the road was! I just love what you do here, and thanks so much for salvaging DC history in this way.

  2. It is also interesting to look at the background and see what buildings are/aren’t there ( I assume it is Constitution ).
