Your default Google Street view is looking East down M St, but the original photo is looking North along 4th St. Very sad overall, I love the trees and general feel of the 1950s picture. 1960s urban design & the Waterside Mall really did not help the character here…
I can’t help but feel that what they did to SW was criminal. Much of the housing stock was worn hard and such but that was the case for a lot of house on the Hill as well. IMHO, what they replaced it with never has lived up to what I think they were hoping – though it may be moving in that direction 50 years later.
So sad to see the corner store in nothing but dreams & photos like this!!!
The 1950s hoods were just so much more homey, that todays cold street corners.
