Exploring the History of Smith Transfer and Storage Company in Washington, D.C.

This is the Smith Transfer and Storage Company, formerly at 1313 U St., where the Ellington Apartment Building sits today. This photo was taken sometime between 1910 and 1920.

  1. Really cool photo. Especially the trees that really don’t exist along U Street today. Isn’t this still a storage facility? I though the Ellington apartments were on the other side of the street.

  2. The building is still there on the south side of the street. The Ellington is further down on the north side of the street.

  3. Smith’s Transfer & Storage was still around into the 1970’s…their slogan was “Don’t make a move without calling Smith’s.” I went to school with one of the Smith children.
