Uncovering the Past: Identifying Old Buildings in an Aerial View of E Street in Washington, D.C. Around 1900

Can you identify any of these old buildings? This is an aerial view of E St. around 1900.

  1. Way back in the back there looks like a factory with something that looks like

    ..anenhower & Co
    ..anenhowers Co

Wonder if the old Sanborn fire insurance maps may be helpful with this. I do know that the city directories for DC are street address as well and with a location it may be possible.

  2. OK I just can’t let this go. I think the name on the sign in the distance is Danenhower & Co. I did find something from Chronicling America that indicates he had a problem with the railway because of property he owned near Canal and New Jersey and H. I think is is for some sort of storage facility. I think they were close to the Allegheny Coal Company location though they aren’t specifically seen on the Sanborn maps (around vol 2 map 220, 221, 222).

I also found a 1887 Boyd’s directory with a Danenhower & Co which had a location for a feed warehouse at 462 H SW. Seems to be a father son William W and Washington.

  3. There are a lot of houses that look like the photo on E st even today. 15th is one example. Actually all over.
