An Amazing Photo of National Airport in 1967: Kennedy Center and Watergate Under Construction

This is such a great find. We came across this while checking out our favorite Facebook page, Old Time D.C. This is a shot from an Eastern Airlines flight on approach to National Airport in 1967. You can see the Kennedy Center under construction on the right and the Watergate buildings going up on the left. What an amazing photo.

  1. It looks as though the building that housed the old Watergate Inn was still in existence when this photo was taken. Also note that the residential wing of Columbia Plaza was under construction at the time. Somewhere beneath all that construction lay the remains of Christian Heurich’s Brewery, part of which, “The Old Vat,” was also home to Arena State for some years. BTW, the aircraft was a Lockheed Electra, with a “c”.
