50 Years Ago Today: The Washington Post Ad for Capitol Park Townhouses

This is an advertisement from The Washington Post, printed on Wednesday, October 23rd, 1963 — exactly 50 years ago today. It’s so sad that developers destroyed basically all of southwest to “modernize it” with these brutalist, Soviet-looking buildings.

  1. Wrongo….”brutalist, Soviet-looking buildings.” might describe Tiber Island at 4th and M SW but Capitol Park is pretty innocuous suburban apartment architecture with a wealth of brick detail: https://www.google.com/maps/preview#!q=Capitol+Park+Plaza&data=!1m8!1m3!1d3!2d-77.01409!3d38.879288!2m2!1f351.41!2f90!4f75!2m7!1e1!2m2!1sdkyOzoSAs2wfJRXk6j9eAw!2e0!5m2!1sdkyOzoSAs2wfJRXk6j9eAw!2e0!4m15!2m14!1m13!1s0x0%3A0xe954db740047bbdd!3m8!1m3!1d1529!2d-77.014099!3d38.8806589!3m2!1i1600!2i756!4f13.1!4m2!3d38.8796457!4d-77.0141602&fid=5

The townhomes are undistinguished but hardly brutalist. It’s actually a pleasant little enclave.

  2. Agreed with M_B_G. As a resident of CP myself, I’d say if anything it’s an example of the beneficial impact that these urban renewal efforts can sometimes have if done right.

Put another way, I seriously doubt the Soviet Union had anything like the beautiful pastel colored buildings, well-maintained footpaths, and tree-lined roundabouts that the complex has.
