This is really stretching it to be included as a GoDC post, but seeing as Harpers Ferry is quite close, and is a reasonable day trip from D.C., we’re going to include this photo. Plus, it’s a terrific photo and we want to share it with everyone. It was taken in July of 1865.

On your left, the Union (Maryland). On your right, the Confederacy (Virginia). In the middle, West Virginia, which seceded from Virginia to join the Union as a new state.
