Exploring the 700 Block of 12th Street NW in 1920: A Look at Metro Center Before it Was Metro Center

This is a great old photo from 1920, showing the 700 block of 12th St. NW. Today, this is the area around Metro Center. I don’t know about you, but I prefer the look of the neighborhood in this photo.

Washington, D.C., 1920. "729 12th St., Washington Times." Various shades of Twelfth Street. National Photo Co. Collection glass negative.

  1. Zoom in and check out the two guys watching the photographer through the window of the builders office. Excellent shot, love zooming in and checking out all the little details.

  2. Wow. Nothing like that now. I worked at 12th and G until 2006. Technically we were 1200 G St, but it is the same block.
