Breaking a Sweat with Vice President Coolidge and House Speaker Gillett: A Look Inside the House Gym from 1923

Are you ready to get your sweat on with some of the most powerful people in America? Check out this photo from January 31, 1923, featuring Vice President Coolidge and House Speaker Gillett hitting the House gym. Yes, even politicians need to work on their beach bods!

The image offers a glimpse into a bygone era, when lawmakers had their own private gym for exercise and recreation. But don’t be fooled by the serious expressions on their faces – we can only imagine the trash talk and friendly competition that must have gone on during their workouts. Who could do more push-ups? Who had the best bicep curls? We may never know, but one thing is for sure: these guys were definitely breaking a sweat!

  1. The pulley/weight stack machine looks pretty modern, albeit kinda wimpy, weight-wise. I have NEVER seen the point of Indian Clubs, though . . . they were popular in the early part of the 20th century. There’s likely a reason they didn’t last.
