BRITAIN’S FIRST WOMEN PRIME MINISTER, MARGARET THATCHER ARRIVES AT NO.10 DOWNING STREET TO TAKE UP OFFICE FOLLOWING THE CONSERVATIVE VICTORY IN THE GENERAL ELECTION.
27/04/04: Three main events will mark the 25th anniversary next week of Margaret Thatcher’s accession as Britain’s first woman Prime Minister. The grammar school educated daughter of a Grantham shopkeeper entered Downing Street on May 4, 1979, quoting St Francis of Assisi, the day after the Conservatives had swept Labour out of office with a Commons majority of 44. The election returned 339 Conservative MPs and 268 Labour MPs.
