Best of Ghosts of DC

Over the many months that this blog has been up, we’ve had hundreds of posts go live. Some have been good, some have been bad.

Here, we want to feature some of the very best material we’ve published (at least what we think is the best). We hope you agree.

Abraham Lincoln in Color (1865)

Many of you will agree, that this is one of the best finds GoDC has come across. You have to check out the colorized photo in this post, because it is downright eery.

100 Years Ago Today: Major Archibald Butt, D.C. Resident, Boards Titanic for Transatlantic Crossing

This is a story about tragedy. Archibald Butt was a military aide to Presidents Roosevelt and Taft. He had reached the point of complete mental and physical exhaustion, and needed to take a vacation. Off to Europe he went for a month and then booked his return voyage aboard the Titanic.

Shiny Red Metro Trains

Did you know that Metro cars were initially supposed to be tomato red? We didn’t either. That’s why this is such a cool post. It’s interesting to think how different out public transit would be if our orange and green line trains were actually painted red.

Senior Prom at the White House

How cool would it be to have your prom at the White House? Well, it actually happened back during the Ford Administration, since they had a teenage daughter. It’s a fun story with some awesome 1970s photos sprinkled in. Too bad you weren’t there in the East Room to get down with the party.

During the Civil War could the Capitol building be seen from the White House?
